The Color of Palo Alto
From Palo Alto Wiki
The Color of Palo Alto was a four-part series of artworks displayed in front of City Hall.
The fourth installation of the series was by Samuel Yates. It an elaborate municipal art project to survey every home in Palo Alto via a photograph from the front of the property and present these photos on the surface of the main City Hall building. There were 22,339 photos in all. This public art was unveiled August 5, 2008. Its website displays a map of Palo Alto with every parcel shown, somewhat in the style of http://www.zillow.com/ . Yates photographed every home and building in Palo Alto (at the rate of about 50 per day) and assigned and average color to each photo. He conducted this entire, extensive survey on bicycle. He then printed each photo onto a finely perforated black adhesive contact paper that he then applied to the outside windows of City Hall. Coin-operated tourism telescopes and an extensive index were provided so that visitors could find an image of any home in the City, including, of course, their own.
