The Mayfield School District was formed in 1855 with the creation of an elementary school. It was located in the small town of Mayfield, which is now Palo Alto. The first Mayfield School was in a little log cabin on Birch Street between Sherman and Grant streets. Nicknamed "The Herring Box," it was replaced in 1867 with Sherman School, a two-story barnlike building. A third school, which stood until 1940, was erected in 1898 for $14,000.
