Children's Library
From Palo Alto Wiki
The Children's Library is one of Palo Alto's five libraries. The library is right next to the Lucie Stern Community Center, where the Palo Alto Children's Theatre puts on their productions. The library is located at 1276 Harriet Street, 94301. It can be reached at 329-2436.
[edit] History
The library was opened on September 14, 1940 and was donated to the city of Palo Alto from affluent resident Lucie Stern in the name of her daughter, Ruth. Later on, a small garden in the back would be added and named the "secret garden." There, children and adults could enjoy sunshine while reading or playing.
[edit] Recent Renovation
As of December 2005 it has been undergoing rennovations, using $3 million in funds from community donations due to its over-crowding and faliure to meet seismic standards. The library was originally designed by architect Birge Clark and was around 3,360 square feet and housed around 40,000 volumes, all Children's books. The plan for the renovations is to add a wing to the back of the library, expanding it by over 50%. The library is scheduled to open late 2007.
